Social science research

As a social scientist, my role is to design, manage and interpret sociological research, often within interdisciplinary projects, using a range of methodologies to improve biodiversity outcomes. My area of specialisation involves understanding the social factors that shape human interactions with the natural environment, such as non-monetary values. This research has significant impact because it often explores the interface between science and policy, for example when scientific evidence affects stakeholder livelihoods. My broad research interests are the relationships between humans and nature, specifically social, shared and cultural values of threatened species and ecosystem services. I am also interested in developing ways to improve the integration of science into policy-making decisions.

I have significant experience of managing research projects and offer a range of consultancy services to assist with achieving your research and publishing objectives, including:

  • Desktop research
  • Literature reviews
  • Research design and management
  • Quantitative and qualitative methodologies
  • Questionnaire and workshop guide development
  • Interviewing
  • Journal article and report preparation

I am also experienced in applying the Community Voice Method to foster deliberative public participation in environomental management decision-making processes. This involves filming qualitative interviews with diverse stakeholders and creating a documentary to represent the full array of discourses on a topic. Read more about this process and watch my film about valuing the benefits of marine ecosystem services

Proofreading and editing

I provide a professional proofreading and editing service, mostly for academics working in the environmental sector but also in the arts, history and education. This includes proofreading your text for spelling and grammatical errors, editing for conciseness, checking references cited are included in the reference list, and reference formatting in the appropriate style.

I typically charge AUD$60 per hour (£35 / Eu 40) but I offer a discounted rate for students and NGOs. Please contact me to discuss your project: gill@gillainsworth.com
